Speaking on ITV's This Morning, rapper Honey G - real name Anna Georgette Gilford - revealed her stage name was coined by an old university friend around 16 years ago.
"In the year 2000 I was studying at university and one of my mates came up with my name Honey G," she explained.
"I said why Honey G? He said the first letter of my surname is G and the honey is because you're sweet like Honey. I was like, okay, brilliant, yeah."
Honey G, 35, was eliminated from X Factor on Sunday night after falling into the bottom two alongside 5 After Midnight. The judges chose to save the boyband and send Honey G home, meaning she just missed out on a place in the semi-final.
Honey G was the most talked about and divisive contestant this series, constantly having to battle against critics who said she was a novelty act or didn't deserve a spot in the show.
Responding to haters today, Honey G said: "I feel I have just as much right to be in the competition as anyone else. I've worked hard as well, I've captured the audience."
"I'm not fake, this isn't an act," she insisted. "Obviously I've grown up on the underground scene in the music scene. I've been a musician the whole of my life. I'm known to BBC Radio 1Xtra, which is the UK's biggest black music radio station. My mum is a classical pianist, she's also known to the BBC, so people saying this is an act to someone like me…
"I've got a degree in music, it's been the whole of my life," she added. "I think I may have picked up street lingo being on the underground music scene and it's become part of my personality."
