Rapper Honey G, 35, landed in the sing off against Ryan Lawrie, 20, during Sunday night's results show, following their Movie Week performances.
Speaking to Dan Wootton on The Sun's Bizarre Facebook Live, fellow finalist Matt revealed: "I was really surprised to see her in the sing off. I couldn't believe she was in the bottom two. I don't think any of us expected that. I thought she would fly to the final."
"I feel like she was a little bit taken aback and didn't expect it either," added Matt, who confessed he'd be "so scared" to go against Honey G in the sing off.
"I think she got this far so she's doing something right. I already said, after that sing off, I wouldn't want to be in a sing off with her. She pulled it out of the back. I think she just nailed it."
Meanwhile, Matt, 23, also defended Honey against her critics, saying she fully deserved to be on X Factor and worked really hard.
"Honey is amazing," said Matt. "I don't think anybody has as much fun as she does on stage. She definitely deserves her place. She goes up there and loves it. She lives to be up there."
Honey was saved by the judges after Simon Cowell, Sharon Osbourne and Louis Walsh all voted to send Ryan home. Ryan's mentor Nicole Scherzinger voted to save him.
"To be honest, I'm just proud of myself for getting this far," said Ryan afterwards.
"Honey G puts the work in just as much as any of us do so no, I don't think she deserved to go. I think Honey G deserved to stay as she has worked really hard and deserves it as much as any of us."
X Factor continues Saturday at 8pm on ITV.
