X Factor's in-house choreographer and creative director Brian Friedman has suggested it may benefit Emily Middlemas and Ryan Lawrie if one of them were to leave the competition, according to reports.

Emily and Ryan are both competing on the live shows, but they have been dating for over a year.

Brian has suggested the pair are leaning on each other for support throughout The X Factor, and that it "would do them both good" if one of them were to be sent home by the public.

Speaking to The Sun, Brian was quoted saying: "I feel like [Emily and Ryan are] each other's support systems throughout this, so I definitely feel like their confidence is stronger because they have each other."

For the last three weeks running, Ryan has found himself in the bottom three following the public vote. Although, he has been saved from the sing off every time, thanks to the X Factor's flash vote.

And while Brian admits that Emily would be "gutted" if Ryan did end up being given the boot, he has suggested it could benefit her in the long run as she would no longer be "distracted" by her beau.

Brian added: "If they're alone, they would have to really rise to the occasion and step up to the plate. That would do both of them good not to have any distraction and to really fight for it."

However, Brian has since taking to Twitter to clarify that his comments do not mean he wants either Emily or Ryan to actually leave The X Factor - they have been misconstrued. He tweeted: "Dear UK press, I know you love a headline but come on! I LOVE young love & @emilymiddlemas_ & @RyanLawrie_ don't want either 2 go! #twisted."

Meanwhile, Emily has said it is "horrible" waiting to hear the results each week - especially as she is worrying about not only her fate, but Ryan's too.

Speaking on The Xtra Factor, she said: "When the results come, I have so many mixed emotions. When they shout my name out, I'm thinking about him as well... waiting backstage to hear the lifeline vote is horrible. You just want his name to be shouted out. I feel like it's me as well because we are one person."

Emily has previously credited boyfriend Ryan for "helping her" through her X Factor journey. The 18-year-old said: "It's good fun [having him here] because obviously with the competition, we can have a lot of pressure on us because of last minute changes and all that, but he's always there for me and we help each other."

She revealed the couple have even discussed the possibility of one being sent home before the other, and Emily added: "If he was to go further in the competition that me, I would be so happy for him. He would be happy for me. It's like we are one. If he's happy, I'm happy."

Ryan agreed: "It's good we can be there for each other and help each other out. Whatever happens, happens. Whoever goes or stays, we support each other."

Emily recently credited Ryan for being her "rock".

She paid a gushing tribute to Ryan on Twitter and told fans: "I wouldn't be where I am today if I didn't have him. He is the most caring and loving person. He is my rock. I love you. @RyanLawrie_."

Ryan replied: "I love you too @emilymiddlemas."
