Love Island's Tom Powell is raising awareness of the dangers of using your phone while driving, after apologising to fans for making that "stupid" error himself.

The reality star posted a string of messages to Twitter on Tuesday (1 November) saying he was deeply sorry for any time he'd used his own phone while driving, and urged fans to be safe and not to do the same.

Tom, 24, tweeted: "Have to hold my hands up when I've been an idiot. Someone close to me has recently shown me the dangers of using your phone whilst driving

"So I have to admit I was very wrong and naive by not seeing the real dangers in doing so. But I have learnt from my stupidity and I can safely say I will never use my phone whilst driving again... Thank you for showing me the error of my ways."

Tom added on Snapchat: "I fully understand it was completely wrong for me to do and can safely say I will never drive and Snapchat again."

When a police officer responded to thank Tom for talking about the issue, Tom replied: "Anything I can do to help raise awareness.. Big thanks to @sophiegradon."

It seems Tom's girlfriend and Love Island co-star Sophie Gradon was the one who raised the issue with him, as she tweeted two days ago: "Seriously, we all need to put our phones down when we're behind the wheel. Not worth it. #channel4news.

"Why can't they develop an app fixed in every phone that knows when you're doing more than 5mph & shuts off connectivity etc? Hmm."

When someone replied to say Sophie should talk to Tom, she responded: "I did."

Fitness instructor Tom and model and former Miss Great Britain Sophie met on the second series of Love Island over the summer.
