The Xtra Factor spinoff show co-host told ITV's This Morning he was worried people thought Gifty had been "rude" when it came to her reaction to being eliminated.

Gifty was visibly upset to be going home and very quiet when interviewed by Dermot O'Leary on the main show, flanked by her mentor Simon Cowell, who apologised for getting the song choice wrong.

Simon told Gifty he had chosen the wrong song for her.

On This Morning on Monday, Holly Willoughby remarked: "Can I just say, from my point of view at home knowing nothing, [Gifty] looked really angry at Simon. I have never seen Simon make such a groveling apology to anybody. She didn't even look at him!"

Rylan agreed: "You could see on her face she was absolutely gutted. Completely gutted."

He went on to say "if looks could kill" after the studio watched a replay of Simon's apology to Gifty, who did not respond to him on the main show, but did thank him effusively for his support on Xtra Factor.

"I know she was upset but…" said Holly.

Rylan said: "I had a chat with [Gifty] last night and said, look I know it's disheartening when you leave the competition, especially when everyone thinks you will do well and last along while, but you have to smile, keep your chin up and embrace the opportunity."

He added: "She is allowed to be gutted but I just don't want her to come across as if she's being rude. That's what I don't want for her. She has gone and it has a shame but the show will go on."

Phillip Schofield added: "She has every right to be annoyed, she's an incredible talent."

Gifty sang a Fifth Harmony song again on Saturday.

Gifty, meanwhile, tweeted: "Not going to pretend I'm happy and smile for the beneficial of others. I worked my ass off and I was gutted. I'm allowed to be (sic)."

Rylan added that although there has been a lot of shock over Gifty's exit, he didn't want to take anything away from Four of Diamonds' performance in the sing off.

"Four of Diamonds last night were fantastic, I really want to put that out there. They sang for their lives, their harmonies were on point. They sounded amazing."

Gifty and Four of Diamonds landed in the sing off after Ryan Lawrie, also in the bottom three, was saved for a third time by the public flash vote. Ll the judges bar Gifty's mentor Simon chose to save Four of Diamonds.

Simon then told Gifty he had got the song choice wrong, having selected a second Fifth Harmony track in four live shows for her. Simon said it was too gimmicky for her. Gifty, meanwhile, said she'd been a bit "iffy" about the song from the start and worried the audience would be bored by another Fifth Harmony track.

However, she added: "Simon has been absolutely fantastic, he's always had my best interests at heart and has always done what made me feel comfortable. With him saying he picked the wrong song, I don't blame him, I feel he honestly felt it was the right song for me and I would smash it.

"I tried my absolute best. I knew it was a risk doing Fifth Harmony song, like third time. I personally feel people are going to think she's too predictable, but you know what, I did it and I have complete faith in Simon; he knows what he's doing."
