In a tribute posted to Twitter, his manager Steve Coy said: "It is with the greatest sadness that we have to break the tragic news that our beloved Pete Burns (of Dead Or Alive) died suddenly yesterday of a massive cardiac arrest."

He continued: "All of his family and friends are devastated by the loss of our special star.

"He was a true visionary, a beautiful talented soul, and he will be missed by all who loved and appreciated everything he was and all of the wonderful memories that he has left us with.

"We have no more words, we will make a further statement when we have had a chance to come to terms with our devastating loss.

"He will live forever in our memories."

Pete formed Dead Or Alive in 1980. Their most successful hit was 'You Spin Me Round'. He went on to forge a solo career and released his last single in 2010, titled 'Never Marry An Icon.'

In 2006, he appeared alongside Chantelle Houghton, Jodie Marsh and Samuel Preston in the fourth series of Celebrity Big Brother. Pete made it to the final and finished in fifth place on the show.

Preston has tonight paid tribute to Pete on Twitter, saying: "Heartbroken to hear about Pete Burns. He was a true punk rocker and one of the kindest hearts I've ever known. Gutted."

Sadly, Pete was mostly famed for his addiction to cosmetic surgery. Earlier this year, he admitted to having 300 procedures to change his appearance.

Although, he did admit most of the work he has had done has been reconstructive surgery.

He featured on Channel 5 show Celebrity Botched Up Bodies in September, and addressing his cosmetic work, Pete said: "The number of surgeries I've had is probably 300. I hope when I'm 80 and get to heaven God doesn't recognise me."

On the show, Pete explained that his relationship with surgery began following the success of 'You Spin Me Round'. He added: "I realised I was going to be a visual entity and that I had to look good... When you're young, self conscious and standing in front of a camera and the photographers are whispering, 'Can we turn his head to the left?' You think, 'I'll do something about it.'"

Pete was married to partner Michael Simpson. They tied the knot shortly after Pete separated from his former wife Lynne Corlett in 2006. They had married in 1978.
