The fan favourite couple split earlier this year, having just got back together following an eight-month hiatus, although both have said they still love and respect each other, and are on good terms.
On screen, it was suggested a major factor in the break up was Danielle's desire to get married and have children sooner rather than later, while Lockie wanted those things but not for a while yet.
Speaking in the new issue of Reveal magazine, Danielle told us there was more to the split then just the question of tying the knot and kids.
"Everyone thought we split because I wanted marriage and kids but it wasn't that, there was other stuff as well, like him being disrespectful or taking things out on me if he was stressed," she said.
Danielle went on to recount one incident where she fled to the bathroom in tears after hearing something Lockie said during an episode she'd been watching at home with her mum.
"Once, Chris Clark and Amber Dowding asked me, Tommy Mallet and James for some advice, and Tommy said that the woman is always right, whereas James came out with, 'I do what I want because I f**king can.'
"I was watching that particular episode with my mum and i just went into the bathroom and cried because I was just so embarrassed by what he'd said. How horrible that my mum was sitting there looking at me, thinking, 'Oh, is this the man that my daughter is going to spend the rest of her life with, someone who speaks to her like that?'"
That being said, Danielle told us she has nothing but kind words and praise for Lockie, calling him a "great man", "loyal" and "protective". She said romance is off the cards for them now, but they still "love and respect" one another.
That echoes what she said on Lorraine last week: "We're in a good place. I think sometimes it's best to just let go. We did try, we tried our best to make it work."
Pick up the brand new issue of Reveal magazine, in shops now, for more from Danielle including her thoughts on Megan McKenna and Pete Wicks' drama. There's also interviews with ex-TOWIE star Sam Faiers, and Mario Falcone, who tells us why TOWIE men can be tempted to stray.
On the first episode of TOWIE's 19th series, we saw Danielle and Lockie come face to face in Marbella, after Danielle revealed their split came after Lockie told her he didn't want marriage and children, and at 28, she wanted to know the person she loved wanted the same things as her.
Lockie later clarified he did want those things, but not just yet. He told Danielle: "You don't want to be with me. I respect that. I have to let you go out of respect for you. It works both ways. It's too hard for me to be around you. I'll let you have your time with our friends and that's that."
After digesting the chat, Danielle told the girls: "I feel like I got everything I wanted off my chest and he understood my reasons for the break up. I love him to bits and have a lot of respect for him. He did say he needs to let me go now and move on."
Lockie flew back to the UK early which Danielle admitted she felt appreciative about: "It's really hard having your ex out here."
Back in Essex, Lockie met up with pal Chloe Sims to talk how he was feeling about seeing Danielle in Marbella.
"I wasn't going to talk to her," he admitted. "I was going to stay out of her way but she came and had a chat with me. It was good. We both knew it would be difficult seeing each other. We haven't ever been apart from each other. Danielle was always part of my life, even before we were boyfriend and girlfriend, which makes it difficult."
Lockie added. "I can't really say what will happen. At the minute I'm just trying not to overthink it and we'll see how things go."
