Former Emmerdale star Leah Bracknell has touched the hearts of so many people that her fundraising goal to pay for cancer treatment has surpassed £60,000.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that Leah - who played Zoe Tate in the soap - has been diagnosed with stage four lung cancer, which is deemed terminal.

Her partner Jez set up a gofundme page after the couple looked into potentially lifesaving and pioneering treatment abroad and donations have flooded in.

Within a week of it hitting the headlines, Leah and Jez had reached their goal £50,000. It has now hit more than £60,000.

Leah recently appeared on This Morning and thanked fans for their support. She told hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby: "We actually didn't know it was going to go public at all, we thought naively it would be just friends and close friends [that knew]."

She added: "It's been such a strange few days with all the news coming out. Thank you everybody, it's really touched us all. I genuinely, genuinely had no idea. I'm completely staggered... I'm one person going this route. People only go this route when they really have to. Nobody really wants to ask for money, for whatever reason."

Leah, who has two children, joined Emmerdale in 1990 and was the first actress to play a lesbian in a British soap. She left Emmerdale in 2006 and won 'Best Exit' at the British Soap Awards the same year.
