EastEnders: Could Peter Beale really return to Albert Square?

Ben Hardy, who plays Peter on the BBC soap, bowed out of EastEnders in February 2015, but now viewers have been speculating that Ian Beale's son could make a comeback.

And it's all down to one scene that aired during Thursday (13 October) night's episode...

EastEnders' Ben Hardy bows out of the soap as market stall trader Peter Beale along with Lauren Branning - 24 February 2015.

Viewers saw Peter leave Walford back in February 2015.

Fans saw Lauren Branning (played by Jacqueline Jossa) plan to send a video message to Peter of their son Louis - suggesting he is still alive and in New Zealand.

Lauren and Peter had left Walford for New Zealand last year. They had moved overseas following Lucy Beale's murder reveal, but Lauren has since returned to Albert Square without Peter and with his brother Stephen Beale instead.

Stephen and Lauren are together and he is helping her to raise her and Peter's son, but could her latest gesture towards Peter mean he's not entirely out of the picture?!

Fans were quick to react on Twitter, with one user commenting: "Can Peter just come back already?" Another said: "Eastenders need to bring back Peter Beale."

It's not the first time Peter's return has been hinted at, as Aaron Sidwell (who plays Stephen) has openly shared his hopes for his onscreen brother to make a comeback.

Aaron told The Sun: "Peter is always going to be a fixture in the story, considering that he and Lauren have a child together that Steven is raising. I would like to see Ben Hardy reprise his role of Peter and to see a showdown between him and Steven for Lauren."

Ben, meanwhile, has't appeared to comment on the rumours.

He first announced he was leaving EastEnders in November 2014 and Peter's exit played out on the show three months later. Since then, Ben has gone on to star in X-Men Apocalypse alongside Hollywood A-lister Jennifer Lawrence.

Speaking about his decision to quit EastEnders, Ben told Fault magazine: "I just left really. It's one of those things you've got to just get out there and do, otherwise I might find myself waking up in 10 years wondering what could have been."
