James Arthur has admitted his nerves got the better of him during his performance on The X Factor.

Fans saw James make a return to the show on Sunday night (9 October) to perform his number one single, 'Say You Won't Let Go', live on stage. There's no doubt he impressed with his vocals, but James took to Twitter following his performance and admitted his nerves had made him mess up a little...

James tweeted: "That was the most nerve wracking thing I've ever done so apologies for the pitchyness and incorrect lyrics but thank you so much everyone (sic)."

The 28-year-old slipped up on the second verse of his track. James repeated the line, 'I'll bring you coffee with a kiss on your head,' instead of singing the lyrics: 'I'll wake you up with some breakfast in bed, I'll bring you a coffee with a kiss on your head.'

While some viewers did pick up on the mishap on social media, that didn't stop James from receiving plenty of praise for his performance. Simon Cowell tweeted a photo of himself and James following the show, and tweeted: "Couldn't be happier to welcome back @JamesArthur23. Huge congratulations."

James replied: "Very kind sir thank you. Pleasure to be back."

Nicole, meanwhile, gushed on The X Factor: "I wanted to say I'm so proud that we get to be back here together, I've always told you, no matter what, the cream rises to the top and you're back on top. To me, I love you, you're the best X Factor winner this show has ever had."

Nicole had mentored James to success on The X Factor back in 2012. He was the winner of the competition that year, beating Jahmene Douglas.

Reveal caught up with Nicole ahead of the first X Factor live show this series, and she told us she has continued to stay in touch with James and all of her boys (including Jahmene). Gushing about James' success with his comeback single, Nicole said: "It's been really hard for James, I'm not going to lie. There's been a lot of negativity out there, unnecessarily, and haters. I've always told him, 'Put it in the music, I know it's hard, but if it's meant to be, it will happen.' I'm so proud. It's just so great to see that he is on top now. I've always thought the world of him."

James' performance came before it was revealed Bratavio were the first act to be eliminated from the live shows. The duo, made up of Bradley Hunt and Ottavio Columbro, found themselves in the bottom two alongside Saara Aalto. They were sent home from the competition after Nicole, Simon and Sharon Osbourne all chose to save Saara.

Speaking on The Xtra Factor after being given the boot, Ottavio said: "We are alright, we gave it our best shot. If the public didn't connect with us there is nothing more we can do. The only way is up! Saara is amazing and she has an outstanding vocal range so well done Saara."

The X Factor continues Saturday 14 October on ITV.
