The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) have shut down allegations that Brad Pitt is 'under investigation for child abuse', after wife Angelina Jolie has filed for divorce.

News that Brad and Angelina are set to divorce broke on 20 September, and since then, unconfirmed reports have accused Brad, 52, of being 'verbally abusive and physical' with one of the couple's six children during an incident on their private plane.

They suggested that the Ocean's Eleven star is being investigated for the claims, but the LAPD have dismissed this.

One officer told The Telegraph they had no idea where the claims have come from, and said: "We have absolutely not initiated anything on Brad Pitt. We don't know where this has come from - maybe hearsay or something - but certainly no complaint has been made to us."

"Our phones started ringing off the hook this morning, and so we checked with our detectives and they confirmed that they are not investigating him either," the officer added. "There is no child abuse investigation into Brad Pitt."

Speaking to CNN, another officer confirmed: "LAPD is not handling any report of allegations of child abuse for Mr. Brad Pitt."

A representative for Brad directed CNN back to the actor's original statement, which had addressed his children, and was released in response to news of his divorce. It read: "I am very saddened... but what matters most now is the well-being of our kids. I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time."

Brad and Angelina, 41, are parents to Maddox, 15, Pax, 12, Zahara, 11, Shiloh, 10, and twins Vivienne and Knox, eight. Confirmation they are set to divorce was given by Angelina's lawyer and comes two years after the pair married in August 2014 and spent twelve years together.

Angelina's attorney revealed that she was the one to initiate proceedings and stated Angelina's decision had been based on the "health of the family."

According to TMZ, the divorce papers cite irreconcilable differences and the US website alleges Angelina has requested custody of the kids, allowing Brad visitation rights.

Brad's lawyer has yet to comment.

This will be Brad's second divorce, as he was previously married to Friends star Jennifer Aniston. He was still married to Jen when he first met Angelina while filming Mr and Mrs Smith, and later revealed he "fell in love" with Angelina on set.

Angelina, meanwhile, has been divorced twice previously following marriages to actors Jonny Lee Miller and Billy Bob Thornton.
