Love Island star Adam Maxted has spoken out in defence of his new girlfriend Carly Taylor, after noticing she has been targeted by negative comments since the pair have gone public with their romance.

Criticising those that have spoken "degradingly" about Carly, Adam shared a lengthy message via Twitter to address any haters.

He said: "I didn't go on Love Island to be a reality TV star or to be famous and I don't consider myself as that, I went on there as I saw it as an opportunity to further my wrestling career and to get exposure as a wrestler which I felt would benefit my career and ambitions to make it to the WWE in the future.

"Anyone that watched the show will know that I was true to myself and didn't just pretend to like girls in there just to stay on the show."

Adam continued: "Now that I'm out of that environment and have met someone that is exactly what I've been looking for after staying single for so long.

"She didn't ask for any of this attention that comes with being with me, and for people to comment negatively and degradingly about her and her appearance just shows how ugly you really are to pass judgement on someone you know nothing about."

Alongside his message, Adam tweeted: "Haters gonna hate."

Adam's tweet has been liked by over 700 fans so far and he received plenty of credit from his followers for sticking up for his girl. Ex On The Beach's Conor Scurlock (Holly Rickwood's ex) also made sure to show Adam his support, tweeting in reply: "@AdamMaxted do your thing brother your misses is fire #haters."

Adam first revealed he and Cary (a dance and fitness instructor) are dating by sharing a slew of photos of the pair on holiday together in Mallorca.

Gushing about his other half, Adam told his fans: "Attention from hundreds, thousands even millions of people means nothing if it isn't from that 1 person you want it from @xcarlytaylorx."

His new romance comes after he finished in fourth place alongside Katie Salmon during the final of Love Island's second series. They enjoyed a bit of a fling on the show, but once Love Island had wrapped, Adam revealed he and Katie had ended things.

Remember that kebab metaphor he used in reference to their split? Oh, the drama...
