The popstar was reportedly enjoying a night with friends at a pub in Redcar when he was attacked, leading to treatment in hospital.
A police rep told The Mirror: "We received a report of an assault at the Plimsoll Line on Redcar High Street at around 10.40pm on Saturday August 20. A 28-year-old man received a head wound after he was reported to have been hit with a bottle.
"The man was taken to James Cook University Hospital for treatment. Inquiries are ongoing in relation to the incident."
James has yet to directly comment on the alleged attack but fans have now noticed he alluded to something happening in Redcar that night when he tweeted, "Good night in Redcar tonight," alongside emojis of a confused face and a beer glass.
He then retweeted someone who replied: "Said no one EVER."
After the alleged attack hit the headlines, one follower jokingly asked if James fancied a night out in Redcar, prompting the singer to reply: "Yeah it's normally class. Bad night at the office pal."
James also told another Twitter user he was "fine". The user had tweeted: "Wait, are you okay?" James responded: "I'm fine thank you. No worries we move on #BackFromTheEdge."
