The picture was taken after England - captained by Coleen's husband and Kai's father Wayne – lost against Iceland in Monday night's Euro 2016 game.
Coleen had been in the stands cheering on her husband with their son Kai, six.
But their ecstasy at England taking an early lead thanks to a penalty scored by Wayne soon turned to agony, as Iceland went on to score another two goals, knocking England out of the competition.
A photo of Kai in tears was used on a national newspaper's cover today to illustrate the defeat.
Coleen tweeted today: "Yes I've seen that front page and it's absolutely shocking!!"
Many of Coleen's followers responded, saying they believed it was wrong to use a photo of an upset child in distress on a newspaper cover, and that neither Kai nor Coleen had anything to do with England's loss.
One said the image of Kai crying had been used to make a "petty point" while another said: "Using a child to highlight his dad's performance is out of order."
Another said: "That is disgusting! Your children aren't apart of what you do! 1 man is t to blame there were 11 of them out on that pitch! (sic)."
Coleen has been in France with her and Wayne's children since the start of the competition, cheering him on. They're also parents to son Klay, three, and baby Kit, born in January.
After being questioned on whether the Rooneys would be fined for allowing Kai to watch the football during term time, Coleen recently explained on Twitter that Kai went to private school, which is why he had been allowed to attend the football, adding the school had given them extra work to take away to France.
