The 20-year-old – who was stripped of her Miss Great Britain title last week – opted to quit the ITV2 series on Sunday (19 June) after learning her mother was unwell back in the UK.
Her exit will be aired tonight.
Zara is called away in private to be told about her mum's health, and then returns to the islanders to tell them she has chosen to go home.
"My mum's in hospital. So I've got to go home," she tells them.
"I don't want to leave at all. I just don't want to go. I'm having the time of my life here, and I feel like I'm in a good place and what happened happened and I've moved on. And I just wanted to show everyone who I am, and nothing's changed me."
Zara adds in the Beach Hut: "I'm disappointed to be going but family is everything. I'm going to remember every single little bit of being in the villa. I'll never, ever, ever forget this."
Kady said: "She's so sweet, she wanted it so bad in here. But she's got to be with her mum."
Terry added: "She's had some real bad luck the last few days and I think everyone's felt the impact of it."
The pageant winner's had a difficult few days after learning she had been dethroned as Miss Great Britain. The show's organisers chose to take away her title after watching Zara have sex with Alex Bowen in a recent episode.
A statement issued by the organisation said Zara's actions had gone against the responsibilities of the title holder to be a positive role model for women, and claimed Zara had expressly told them she would not have sex in the villa.
"For those saying 'going into Love Island, it's inevitable that she would have sex,' that is not true. It is not a prerequisite of the show that you have sex. We gave our permission for Zara to enter, as our current winner, under the stipulation that she did not have sex on TV," said the company.
"Zara fully agreed to this and knowingly went against our wishes. Zara is a lovely girl, we understand that this is out of character for her and that she truly regrets her actions; however, the decision simply comes down to the fact that she has broken the rules of the competition."
A devastated Zara was told of the decision on Sunday night's episode, breaking down in tears as she claimed all her hard work had been "ruined" by one "stupid" moment.
"They've taken my title of me," she told the islanders. "I just feel I've let my family down, you know what I'm saying? I just feel like people are going to be judging me. I'm having the time of my life in here. I've been true to myself and honest. I'm doing what a normal 20-year-old girl would do. We all make mistakes. You live and learn. It's just s**t.
"I did Miss Great Britain because I wanted to do it. If you put that hard work in, the commitment, the time and the effort… I did. And I won. And I worked so hard. And now just one stupid silly mistake, being in the moment, has ruined everything.
"I can't even out into words how gutted I am."
Zara then received the news from home that her mother had fallen ill, prompting her to quit the show. A statement from ITV yesterday said: "Owing to an illness in the family, Zara Holland has left the Love Island villa to return to the UK. Our thoughts are with her and her family and we send all of our best wishes."
Model Zara added: "I'm so sad to leave the villa but it's important for me to get home and spend time with my mum while she gets better. I've had the time of my life on Love Island and would like to thank all of my fellow Islanders and the production team for all their support."
Love Island bosses have said Zara is welcome to return to the show in the future "depending on circumstances in the villa."
Love Island airs nightly on ITV2.
