Sources close to Stephanie Davis have said Jeremy McConnell's denial that he is the father of her child will "backfire" on him.

Former Hollyoaks actress Steph is currently pregnant with her first child, but her ex-boyfriend Jeremy has said he 'isn't' the father to her unborn baby - despite her suggesting he is.

He made the claims in a recent interview with Irish publication TVNow magazine, and has alleged that he 'can't be the baby's dad', as Stephanie had told him she was on her period after their fourth split last month.

Jeremy had said: "I'm not going to be a dad. If she is pregnant, it's not mine. If I was a dad, I'd be 100% no, 110%, the best dad in the world. But you'll see in the future that it's not my kid, and she'll look like a mug."

He claimed: "Look, if she is pregnant it's not my kid. She had her period. We had been broken up."

Now, sources close to Stephanie have told Reveal that Jeremy's denial is "totally unfair."

They said: "These accusations are causing great stress to Stephanie. Treating a pregnant woman like this is totally unfair, given all the changes she is going through."

"For Jeremy to say he isn't the father is going to backfire on him totally," they added. "He should reign in what he is saying because he will have serious egg on his face when the baby is born.

"Women so early on in their pregnancies are very vulnerable, and to publicly attempt to shame Stephanie like this has taken what should be a happy time for her into misery."

A representative for Stephanie had no comment to make, but they have previously insisted Stephanie is pregnant. Steph's rep told the Daily Star: "Our client is categorically pregnant. We do not need to continue repeating this."

Stephanie, meanwhile, hasn't responded to Jeremy's claims. She instead has been focusing on her baby, tweeting earlier today: "Nice day in the sun with bump."

The 23-year-old confirmed she is pregnant back in May, shortly after she and Jeremy split.

Steph revealed her baby news via OK! magazine and said: "My pregnancy was a shock but I can't wait to be a mum. I hope that Jeremy will want to be a part of this baby's life, but if he decides not to then I am prepared to raise our baby on my own."

At the time, Jeremy didn't seem to doubt the child was his, saying: "Just to be clear, if what is circulating is true, I'll always be responsible for my actions and I explained to Steph I'll speak to her, and do everything for her, if she stops drinking and partying knowing she's "pregnant". I'm sick of tit for tat but I won't let anyone slander me.

"I haven't been ideal in the relationship whatsoever, I'm trying to move on peacefully, it's a shock to most, but a kid can't fix a broken relationship."

Since then, the pair have hit out at each other publicly on Twitter. Stephanie had accused Jeremy of not turning up to baby scans and threw drug accusations his way. There is no evidence to support Stephanie's claims surrounding drug use and when contacted by Reveal, Jeremy's rep had no comment to make.

Jeremy, however, has denied any drug use and called Stephanie out for having "no shame."

He and Stephanie began dating, after controversially falling for each other in the Celebrity Big Brother house, earlier this year. On her CBB debut, Stephanie had been dating ex-boyfriend Sam Reece, she later split with him following her exit from the show to pursue a relationship with Jeremy.
