Louis Smith has opened up on his split from ex-girlfriend Lucy Mecklenburgh, and claimed he ended their romance before she became "too attached."

Lucy and Louis had dated for just over a year, before it was revealed they had split at the start of this year. Their break up had come as a surprise to fans, as just weeks before, the couple had enjoyed a romantic New Year break in Thailand.

Now, Louis has opened up on their failed romance, and insists he knew his relationship with Lucy wasn't right.

Speaking to OK! magazine recently, Louis revealed: "I could have stayed with Lucy, but the longer I left it, the more attached she would feel and the more damage it would have done in the future."

"It was hard, but if it's not right, it's not right," he said. "I wanted to make the decision to end it sooner rather than later."

At the time news of their split surfaced, reports claimed their relationship ended due to Lucy and Louis having differing views on settling down. They claimed Lucy was keen to do so, but wasn't prepared to wait for Louis to commit.

Neither Louis or Lucy have confirmed the reason behind their break up, but Louis did hit back at claims it was because he refused to settle down. He told fans back in February: "Yes me and Lucy have broken up!! Yes I'm ok and I'm glad she's ok as well. And yes we definitely want different things. And no the reason isn't because I refused to settle down. It's very different."

Since then, Lucy has spoken out about her split with the Olympic gymnast and revealed "it hurt." She explained the break up was tough because there was no big scandal that had driven it.

Lucy told Fabulous magazine: "What makes it harder is that there wasn't a massive big thing that happened. There was no cheating, no big scandal. We were very happy and everything was going the way it should. It felt like 'it' to me."

"When we got back from Thailand, I just didn't hear from him after we landed," she revealed. "We got back and it was obvious that for him it was done. [...] I'm someone who tries to fix things, but there was no chance to do that. After Thailand, that was it."

It's now been nearly five months since the pair's relationship ended, and Lucy has said she is "loving" being single again.

The former TOWIE star said that things between herself and Louis are now "civil" and he said the same in his recent interview. Louis added: "We still talk. Time definitely heals all wounds, so we chat now and again. I'd say we're borderline friends which is nice and what I always wanted."
