Dominic Treadwell-Collins has revealed that today is his last day on EastEnders.

Dominic will be stepping down from his role as executive producer after two and a half years.

Summing up how he feels to be leaving the soap, Dominic shared a photo of a distraught-looking Peggy Mitchell via Twitter, simply saying: "It's my last day on Albert Square."

As fans of the soap will know, Dame Barbara Windsor will return to the soap for the final time, as teased in a brand new trailer this week. Peggy's yet-to-air exit storyline, which will see the iconic character lose her battle with cancer, is one of the last storyline's overseen by Dominic.

Dominic announced his decision to quit in February, explaining that while it was a "gut-wrenching" decision, it was time for him to "move on" to other things.

During his time on the soap, Dominic has been responsible for introducing the Carter family, masterminding the 'Who killed Lucy Beale?' storyline, and overseeing the live 30th anniversary celebrations including Kathy Beale's surprise return.

Dominic is leaving after two and a half years.

"My love for EastEnders is no secret and so the decision to leave Walford has not been one I have taken lightly," Dominic said in a statement. "When I commit to something, I always give it my all - and after two and a half years of giving my blood to Walford, it is time for me to move on to other things - and keep EastEnders creatively refreshed, something that it has to do to stay at the top of its game.

"It's going to be gut-wrenching to tear myself away from everyone at EastEnders. It's an utterly unique place to work, with everyone working so hard and with such passion - and I am so so proud to have led that brilliant team over the past couple of years."

But, the soap will be in good hands. Replacing Dominic and leading the cast, crew and production team will be Sean O'Connor, editor of The Archers, which is the world's longest running soap opera.

Sean previously worked at EastEnders over 11 years ago as a director, producer and storyline producer, and was responsible for Zoe and Kat Slater's mother-daughter revelation, the domestic violence storyline between Little Mo and Trevor, and Dot Cotton and Jim Branning's romance.
