With lots of changes being made ahead of the return of the ITV talent show, could Louis reprising his role as a judge be one of them?
The Irish music manager gave the strongest hint that he could actually be back in a new interview on the Late Late Show on RTE One.
"I might be [back] and I should be and I probably will be but I actually haven't signed my contract yet," said Louis. "I haven't signed my contract and neither has Sharon. I'm going to when I get it but I haven't got it yet."
Louis' comments came as it was reported that he and Sharon Osbourne met up with Simon Cowell in Los Angeles where they discussed a potential return.
While Louis said that he was "missed" from the show, he reckons he and Sharon will bring "a lot of fun" back to it.
Cheryl Fernandez-Versini and Nick Grimshaw (who replaced Louis last year) have both confirmed that they won't be returning as judges this year.
When asked about their exits, Louis said: "I didn't say I'm delighted but she's [Cheryl] gone. Grimmy's gone - he didn't really work out."
It's currently not known if Rita Ora will return, but Simon is expected to remain as head judge.
The new series of The X Factor will see Dermot O'Leary back as host of the show, taking over from Caroline Flack and Olly Murs after one series.
