He had dropped hints earlier this week that he could be making a show comeback, and now it seems like Mario wasn't kidding! Taking to Twitter, the Essex boy told his 931,000 followers he is returning to the reality show that made him a household name.
Mario tweeted in a now deleted tweet: "I am pleased to announce I am returning to Towie."
While we are aware it is 1 April and our celebrities have been playing a slew of pranks today, we've got a sneaky feeling Mario's tweet may be genuine. After all, he did drop hints he is returning to TOWIE earlier this week, and everybody knows that April Fools pranks have to be carried out by 12pm or else it's bad luck...
On Wednesday night (30 March), the same night TOWIE airs on ITVBe, Mario had got fans talking after he tweeted: "Maybe it's time to return."
Fans instantly linked his tweet to the show, with one user commenting: "@Mario_Falcone oh god yes!! We need you back in it xx." While another said: "@Mario_Falcone Yesss!!! Mario this needs to happen omg I'm loving this idea."
However, a source close to TOWIE has claimed that the show is 'unaware' of Mario's return. They told Reveal: "I think you can assume it's an April Fool."
Slightly confused, like us? We have contacted an official rep for TOWIE for comment.
News of Mario's return comes eight months after he revealed he was leaving the show. Mario made his exit in August last year, telling fans he felt it was the right time for him to "move on."
At the time, he told The Sun: "I have had a great time on TOWIE and relished the many opportunities the show has given me but after 14 series, I feel it is time to move on and explore something new."
He also tweeted: "I have had a fantastic time on TOWIE and met some amazing people along the way! Some good memories and some bad, but have all helped me become the man I am! But I can confirm I have decided to leave the show and pursue some new adventures! Thank you for all your comments today. It means a lot #TOWIE #emotional."
It was, however, said that the "door would be left open" for Mario if he ever did want to return.
He made his TOWIE debut back in 2011 and viewers were introduced to Mario as Lucy Mecklenburgh's then boyfriend. Fans became hooked on their on/off romance and even watched Mario propose to Lucy on board a yacht during a Marbella special.
Following their split (who can forget when Lucy threw that glass of red wine all over him?), he enjoyed romances with both Chloe Sims and Lauren Pope and kept us all entertained thanks to his bromances with Little Chris and Ricky Rayment.
