Ferne McCann has admitted learning to drive a bus has been "challenging" but "fun" as she gears up for her practical exam.

The former TOWIE and I'm A Celebrity… Get me Out Of Here! star has been getting bus driving lessons as part of a campaign to get more women considering the occupation.

Speaking on ITV's This Morning, she said: "I am doing this to encourage more female bus drivers. Less than eight per cent of bus drivers are female so why not? Why can't women become bus drivers?"

Ferne admitted getting used to the "massive" vehicle had been a challenge, saying: "I'm used to a smart car. It is huge! And it's been so challenging. I'm not the best driver but this is huge, it's automatic. It's like a giant go cart and the wheels are behind you. So you almost have to do every manoeuvre a little bit late.

"I've been driving around East London in a bus and I've had people at traffic lights going, 'is that who I think it is driving a bus?' It's been fun. I've hit a few kerbs, I won't lie. I passed my theory test yesterday, second time lucky. My practical test is coming up but I don't want to say when and jinx it."

Ferne shared her joy at passing the theory test yesterday, telling fans on Twitter: "I can't believe I did it. This morning I passed my bus driving test. I officially can drive a bus legally on the roads. I started this challenge 12 days ago. Worked hard, put my mind to it & passed!

"The reason behind getting my license is 2 encourage women 2 consider bus driving. Why not? So I put myself in the driving seat #stagecoach."

She added in a statement: "I'm so proud of myself – I never thought in a million years that I would have the chance to even drive a bus and now I can say I've actually officially gained my bus driving licence.

"It's been a fantastic experience and I've had a brilliant time getting to know Yvonne and the team at Stagecoach. I had no idea how much work goes into running buses. I take my hat off to the drivers I've met and I really hope my involvement has made more women think about bus driving as a career option."
