The new parents chose to film Sam's pregnancy with their first child, son Paul Tony Knightley, for an ITVBe documentary last month, which proved to be controversial thanks to scenes including Paul getting a kiss on the lips from his mother Gaynor and Paul asking Sam to make him beans and toast while she was breast feeding.
Some viewers also described Paul as controlling, suggesting he'd forced Sam into a home birth, and told her to send back designer baby clothes she'd bought but he didn't like.
But speaking to The Sun's Fabulous magazine at the weekend, former TOWIE star Sam strongly defended her man, describing him as "caring" not controlling.
"The thing about Paul is that he cares about me and the baby so much that people mistake that for being controlling. When I showed him the baby clothes and he was like: 'I'm not too sure on that' it's not him being an a***hole, it's just because he really cares about how the baby looks. He's a perfectionist," she said.
Sam also insisted the beans and toast incident had been a joke, and said she'd been fully on board with a home birth, even if that didn't come across on TV.
She also pointed out: "We filmed for three months and they cut it to an hour and a half. Paul works full time and he was juggling everything, but the way it came across on the show was that he wasn't there. He wasn't 100 per cent himself. Watching it back you could see he was so nervous – he was awkward."
As for THAT kiss... Sam said she couldn't see what was so wrong.
"They're just really close. But even Gaynor started thinking, is it wrong? I said not to be stupid. People have different views on things, but it was an emotional moment. Me and Paul watched the show before it went on air and changed some bits and bobs, but it didn't occur to us that the kiss would cause a problem. If I'd have known it was going to be such a big deal, I'd have taken it out because it's just not worth it."
Sam previously defended Paul on Instagram. After the show aired, she said: "Wow Paul really is getting some stick. I wish people wouldn't look into it so much. It's just a TV show edited & made for good viewing.
"Yes he fell asleep reading baby books, didn't attend yoga & no he doesn't cook but he is the most caring loving man I know and the best daddy to baby Paul. Also I'd like to add... This is then man who got me better from Crohn's disease. Months of studying and researching to find me alternative natural medication. He's my hero."
