Rihanna headlining Virgin Media Festival 2016: 8 live performances she totally smashed!
This year she's back as a main headliner alongside Justin Bieber and, if you haven't seen the Barbados-born popstar live before, here are six other performances that prove why you really should see her at V 2016!
(Tickets on sale 9.30am on Friday, 26 February!)
1. Virgin Media V Festival 2011
In 2011, she was the second headliner behind Eminem and opened her slot with a banging version of 'Only Girl (In The World)' before performing mega hits like 'Cheers (Drink To That)' and 'What's My Name'. She totally rocked it when she wasn't a headliner so imagine how awesome she'll be headlining the Virgin Media Main Stage!
2. iHeartMusic Awards 2015
Arriving on stage in a black helicopter and managing to make a very Muppets-esque outfit look glam, she totally killed her performance of 'B*tch Better Have My Money'. She managed to be both terrifying and gorgeous all at once. And totally NAILED the dancing, even when clad in a super tight, super short dress.
3. X Factor 2012
Proving less can be more, the normally explosive performer pared it right back for a gorgeous rendition of 'Diamonds' in December 2012. Standing centre stage, just her and a microphone, she was captivating as she belted out the beautiful and poignant ballad. Then it started raining on stage and, just wow. So powerful, so simple and so effective.
4. BRIT Awards 2012
Closing the BRITs back in 2012, her performance was fun, colourful and just amazing. She started off singing 'We Found Love' inside a Perspex box, before everyone starting slinging paint at each other. The dancing, the mess, the lightning, it all just suited the song to a tee. If you ever need a performance that makes you want to dance and have fun, this is it!
5. Hackney Weekend 2012
She co-headlined the music festival with Jay Z and it was just spectacular. Basically her whole set was incredible but there was something very special about her opening with 'Run This Town' as Jay emerged on stage to join her. The crowd singing every line, the moody lightning, the smoke, the casual cool of the performance, their seamless transition into 'Talk That Talk' and 'Umbrella'. It all combined to create a pretty insane atmosphere.
6. The Concert For Valor 2014
This was a stunning performance when Rihanna teamed up with Eminem for their collaboration 'Monster'. They've performed together loads of times , including on The Monster Tour, and always smash it, but this is a particular favourite, held outdoors for Veteran's Day at The National Mall in Washington DC. Looking oh so gorgeous in a sparkling gown, Rihanna was just amazing as she belted out the incredibly catchy chorus and gave it some attitude.
7. American Music Awards 2010
A true example of how versatile she is. Rihanna started her medley perched on a tree singing her heart out of the emotionally charged 'Love The Way You Lie' (her ballad-y version rather than the Eminem rap one) before leaping down and launching into 'What's My Name' and 'Only Girl (In The World)'. A demonstration of killer vocals, sexy dance moves, emotions, fun, wildness… pretty much everything in one set!
8. Stade de France with Coldplay 2012
Coldplay are epic enough when performing stadiums alone, throw in Rihanna and just wowwwww! She surprised the crowd by emerging during 'Princess of China' looking ravishing in red and sounding incredible. The whole performance was magical, with Rihanna and Chris Martin playing off each other, and really getting into the emotion and passion of the song, clutching hands, touching foreheads and singing their hearts out. Just amazing.
