It seems Nick isn't the sort to drag his mates into helping him make personal decisions, so there were no group meetings or pros and cons lists drawn up between friends before the Radio 1 DJ dropped the bombshell he was outta there.
Asked on the Brits red carpet if he consulted his judging panel co-stars Rita Ora and Cheryl, he told The Sun he hadn't let them in on his exit: "I didn't actually. I spoke to them afterwards but not at the time."
After just one series on The X Factor, it sounds like Nick's decision to leave came as a surprise to absolutely everyone - but Grimmy revealed that he'd viewed being on the show as "a once-in-a-lifetime style thing".
And very importantly missing out on the talent show means that Nick will have his Saturday nights free to kick back and watch the show with a curry. "When you're there, there's no curry," he told listeners on his radio show whilst speaking about his surprise announcement, "And Simon promised me curry!"
Nick also revealed he'd heard that previous long-standing host Dermot O'Leary was rumoured to be replacing Olly Murs and Caroline Flack, who won't be returning.
He said: "I've heard that's happening. I saw him yesterday at an event and I wanted to ask him over a microphone on stage," but said he thought that would be "inappropriate".
Inappropriate maybe, but can you imagine being in the room if Nick did put Dermot on the spot in public? Potential golden awkward silence moment.
