The One Direction star's name had been in the frame following news that Grimmy had quit, and now the boybander has officially confirmed he would be interested in the job.
Louis told The Sun: "Of course, it's really exciting. We've had no official conversation yet. But yeah, I mean, why wouldn't I?"
He's certainly qualified for the role having started his career as a contestant on X Factor. He'd check the boxes for understanding what the contestants are going through, while his mammoth success with One Direction over the past five years means he's in a position to actually give advice about the industry.
Louis appeared as a guest judge at Simon Cowell's judges' houses on the last series of X Factor.
A source previously told The Sun that Simon had been so impressed with Louis' skills he asked him last summer if he'd be interested in a judging role if one became available.
"Louis Tomlinson is very likely to replace Grimmy. He agreed in principle to the job while assisting Simon Cowell during the judges' houses round last year."
BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show DJ Nick is stepping down after one year in the job, while hosts Caroline Flack and Olly Murs have also quit. As it stands, judges Simon, Cheryl Fernandez-Versini and Rita Ora are all returning as none have said anything to the contrary.
