Cole, now 23, is a familiar face to Friends fans, having played Ross and Carol's son Ben. You remember him? The one who went to school with Sting's son Jack and bonded with Rachel over naughty pranks. Oh, and Joey and Chandler once left him on a bus...

He's also a well known face to Disney Channel fans, having starred with twin brother Dylan in the series The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, and its spinoff The Suite Life On Deck. It's thought at one stage they were earning $40,000 per episode of the show, making them the highest-paid teenage actors on Disney at the time.

The twins stepped away from the limelight in 2011 to attend university, graduating last year from New York University.

Sharing his excitement at the new TV role, Cole posted to Twitter: "Thanks for being patient while I stepped away. I'm pleased to announce my return to acting. Catch me on Riverdale."

The CW has ordered a pilot from the show.
