Former TOWIE star Gemma has certainly been one of the biggest personalities in the CBB house and, as perhaps inevitable with the dominant characters, not all viewers have warmed to her.
Speaking to the Daily Star Sunday, her mum Joan said: "When I hear the crowd booing her it turns my stomach. It's upsetting because I know she's a kind, loving, loyal person.
"The public are reacting to the bits they use on the show – we only see one hour of an entire day and night, If Gemma has an off day then she can be snappy, but we all have days when we don't feel great."
Gemma, who celebrated her 35th birthday yesterday, has angered some viewers by refusing to take part in tasks and becoming involved in rows, such as the one with Stephanie Davis, where she branded the actress' behaviour with Jeremy McConnell as a "disgrace".
But Joan - who is a familiar face to The Only Way Is Essex fans - says the public haven't seen her daughter's true, loving side.
She added: "I hope it doesn't affect her work but it could do. Gemma puts on this persona of being tough but I don't know why she does it because she's not like that at all. She only does it when she's on TV. That's what four years on TOWIE does it you."
Meanwhile, in the CBB house, the housemates have been set a secret challenge to sabotage Gemma's birthday by making it the worst birthday ever. So mean! But if they succeed, they win a party and lots of treats for Gemma in the evening.
CBB airs tonight at 9pm on Channel 5
