Ricky has already had supporting roles in Mistresses and The 100, but his Hollywood stardom is set to continue after landing the leading role in the adaptation of Neil Gaiman's novel of the same name.
The former Hollyoaks star will play protagonist Shadow Moon in the adaptation, which will air on American channel Starz.
Ricky tweeted about the news: "Blown away by all your support & love, thank you."
Author Neil Gaiman said he was "thrilled" by the casting, saying Ricky's "auditions were remarkable".
He said in a statement: "The process of taking a world out of the pages of a book, and putting it on to the screen has begun. American Gods is, at its heart, a book about immigrants, and it seems perfectly appropriate that Shadow will, like so much else, be 'Coming to America'. I'm delighted Ricky will get to embody Shadow. Now the fun starts."
In October, Ricky said work-wise, he doesn't see himself ever returning to the UK.
Speaking at the time of Hollyoaks' 20th anniversary, he said: "I will never return to the UK! I absolutely love it out here. It's sunny every day, everyone's really positive and friendly and happy. You wake up in a good mood because the sun's shining. Plus, the work's here. I'm constantly working.
"I'm in two successful TV shows, The 100 and Mistresses. I have various films in the pipeline for next year during my hiatus. And I'm doing conventions. So it's great. I want to ride that wave for as long as possible, because it could all end tomorrow. But I don't think I'm coming back."
We love to see Brits doing so well Stateside. Congratulations, Ricky!
