Walking away from a place in the world's biggest boy-band might sound like a decision that requires a lot of soul searching, but Zayn made it sound like no big deal.
He told Zane Lowe on Beats 1 that when it came to being part of the five-piece: "I just gave it a go because it was there at the time."
Speaking about the time he broke the hearts of 1D's dedicated fandom by quitting the band in March last year, he continued: "I think I kinda always wanted to go. From the first year, I never really wanted to be there in the band.
"When I realised the direction that we were going in, mind the pun, with the music, I instantly realised it wasn't for me. How do you write a song from five people's perspective?"
He added: "I realised I couldn't put any input in. I couldn't give my opinion on this or that because it didn't fit the grain of what we were or what we represented."
Well, that's all a bit gutting for One Direction fans. But at least Zayn 'gave it a go' hey? And there's a silver lining because there's that solo career of his about to take us by storm.
When it comes to 1D and Zayn It's not all total doom and gloom, as despite not feeling much love for the actual music he was creating, Zayn continues to show support his former bandmates.
After Louis Tomlinson announced the arrival of his first child, newborn Freddie Reign, Zayn was quick to acknowledge the happy news when he liked a fan's screenshot of an image Louis shared with the caption: "BLESS ME".
