Olly was the talk of social media last weekend when he accidentally told Monica Michael she was going home before reading out the results from the public vote.
After the show, Olly apologised, tweeting that he "made a massive f%#k up at the end" and is "still learning", but he has now spoken at length for the first time since the gaffe, which was a trending topic on Twitter.
Speaking to The Mirror at the ITV Gala, Olly said: "I think you need to put it in perspective with everything that's going on in the world. At the end of the day, I made a single mistake at a critical point in X Factor which was massively blown out of proportion."
Olly said he was expecting show boss Simon Cowell to have a word with him. "I was expecting a telling off if I'm honest but I didn't get one which was nice," Olly revealed. "I saw everyone after, I saw Monica, I saw all the judges and said I was so sorry and let myself down."
And, hitting back at comments that the show is a fix, Olly said he had "no idea" Monica would actually be the contestant who would be leaving until he got the envelope. "It was just a really awkward moment for me because I made a stupid mistake," he said.
Everyone gave their thoughts on the gaffe, from eliminated contestants Max Stone and Monica, to former host of the show Dermot O'Leary, who told him: "Keep that head up. Happens to us all."
This week, Xtra Factor host Rochelle Humes said her "heart broke" for Olly after his slip-up. "It is live television and he made a genuine mistake and there is not much you can do," she said.
