The former One Direction star has given his first major interview since that relationship ended and since he made the dramatic decision to quit 1D back in March.
When asked if rumours he ditched Little Mix's Perrie via text are true, Zayn, 22, tells the Fader magazine interviewer: "I have more respect for Perrie than to end anything over text message. I love her a lot, and I always will, and I would never end our relationship over four years like that. She knows that, I know that, and the public should know that as well.
"I don't want to explain why or what I did, I just want the public to know I didn't do that."
Zayn and Perrie, 22, shocked fans in August this year when it was revealed they'd ended their relationship after four years together and two of engagement.
The announcement came just after the pair had enjoying a holiday together following Zayn's exit from One Direction, and after Perrie's mum had spoken fondly about him in an interview, saying: "Zayn's one of the nicest boys I've ever met and I couldn't imagine Perrie with anyone else. I feel like he's already my son. They've been together since she was on The X Factor so he's a big part of the family."
It was initially reported that Perrie was devastated by the split, but in recent weeks she's been saying in interviews how much she is enjoying the single life now.
"I'm having an absolute blast. We have a bit of banter with guys in nightclubs... I love it," she said recently. "I love going out. I'm feeling brilliant and I'm in a good place - and I've got new hair."
