One Direction's extended hiatus will actually last two whole years, Liam Payne has revealed.

Appearing on BCC Radio 1's Live Lounge, Liam let it slip that the band will be taking a couple of years off, which is a whole year longer than fans had hoped for. Or a whole two years longer if we're being brutally honest.

Speaking to Greg James, he said: "Obviously we're all going to take a break for a little bit and consider where we are in the world. I just want to write songs, that's been the most fun process out of this, except for touring, has been the writing of the songs and we're going to come back so there's something to write for us and other people.

"We haven't really had time to write an album and whereas two years off…"

Although fans were probably hoping that "two years off" thing was thrown around because Liam got bored of the word 'hiatus', he only went and said it again - which pretty much confirms it's going to be a 24 month wait until the boys return.

He continued: "Writing's not really a job, it's so much fun, we've always had to rush it so it's nice in these two years I'm going to write some songs and see what happens."

Niall Horan added: "We've had five years of craziness. Now we all need to go away, become mad old recluses, then come back again with giant beards."

Niall with a giant beard? There's always a silver lining!

And the hiatus hasn't actually started yet anyway. The band will be performing on the X Factor results show this weekend. We'll be looking out for signs of stubble...
