Former X Factor winner Sam Bailey reckons the show needs to have a songwriting week to help boost ratings.

Talking about the supposed "ratings war" between X Factor and Strictly Come Dancing, Sam said X Factor still has "a lot of people" tuning in every week.

But Sam, who won the talent show in 2013, has a suggestion for what could make the live shows really great.

"I think a songwriting week would be great for the contestants and for ratings," she said in her blog for Ladbrokes. "If you teamed the acts up with a celebrity mentor to help them write their own song it would be really interesting. Imagine the buzz if someone from X Factor wrote their own song and it got to number one half way through the show."

Sam, who was dropped from Simon Cowell's label Syco Music earlier this year, said songwriting is an invaluable skill for all acts to have.

"It's a skill the acts will need if they are going to succeed too," she continued. "Some of the songs I first wrote were terrible but I've stuck at it and I'm now writing my own material with Ben Adams from A1.

Sam won The X Factor in 2013.

"If you want to make it in the music industry you have to write your own songs. That way you can connect with your audience on a personal level. It's also where the money is made in this industry."

For mum-of-three Sam, she's backing Louisa Johnson or Che Chesterman to win the show. "If they aren't in the final two then something has gone wrong," she said.

The second week of the live shows will continue on Saturday at 8pm on ITV, followed by the results show on Sunday.
