Monica Michael has been confirmed as the wildcard for this year's X Factor.

Monica lost out on a place in Rita Ora's final three Girls following the live Judges' Houses results show over the weekend, but producers have now confirmed that youth worker Monica will be making a return and will now join the live shows.

Monica said: "I'm so hyped to be back as the wildcard. Thank you to all the Judges for believing in me and for the public for supporting me. See you on Saturday night!"

Following on from last weekend's show, all judges - Rita, Simon Cowell, Nick Grimshaw and Cheryl Fernandez-Versini - decided that Monica should return.

"I couldn't sleep Sunday night thinking about Monica and if I could convince the other judges of giving her a wildcard," said Rita. "It's so great that Simon, Cheryl and Grimmy agreed. What a rollercoaster for Monica but sooo glad to have her back. So exciting."

Monica's return to the show hasn't come as a surprise because she sparked speculation earlier this week that she was back in the competition.

London-born singer Monica hinted that she had received some unexpected news when she tweeted: "So much for thinking I was getting a few days off! ;)"

Monica has history with The X Factor. She auditioned in 2014 and was an instant favourite after performing her self-penned track 'Pretty Little Sister'. However, Monica did not make it through to Judges' Houses after Cheryl gave her a 'no' during the Six Chair Challenge.

Making her X Factor comeback this year, Monica blew the judges away with a performance of Christina's Aguilera's 'Impossible' at the arena auditions. Simon admitted they had "made a big mistake" and Cheryl said Monica was her "biggest regret" from her category last year.

Monica told Reveal in September that if her stint on The X Factor didn't work out, she wouldn't audition for the show again.

"I don't think I'd audition again," she told us. "There's only so many times the public are going to want to hear that Monica Michael is back. It'd get boring. They'll probably be like, 'Well, I think she should just stay at home now!' It doesn't mean I'd stop doing my music though."
