Coronation Street's Ryan Thomas has been hailed as a hero after saving a child from drowning.

The actor – who plays Jason Grimshaw in the ITV soap – leapt into action after an eight-year-old boy got into difficulty while walking in a cave over the weekend.

Sandra Buckle told the Daily Star that her son Jack fell into the river at the caves in Rydal in Cumbria, and it was Ryan who pulled him to safety.

She said: "He had slipped on the rocks and fallen face down into the water. Before we knew it, Ryan was there and scooped him up out of the water.

"He was so nice and polite."

Ryan's heroic actions came to light after it emerged he'd spent his Saturday evening in police cells following an alleged scuffle at a pub in Bowness-on-Windermere.

The actor was fined £90 for being drunk and disorderly after the incident at the Wheelhouse Club and Lounge. He's currently on leave from Corrie and is due to bow out as Jason Grimshaw next year following a decade on the cobbles.
