Ross, who first burst onto our screens in 1990 as hard man Grant Mitchell, will reportedly reprise his role early next year.
According to The Mirror, Ross will make a sensational return to Walford in a desperate bid to save his alcoholic brother Phil who falls off the wagon following his conflict with Gavin Sullivan.
And the newspaper reports that executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins is making Grant's return a priority to reunite the soap's 'big four' characters – Grant, Phil, Sharon and Kathy.
A source told the paper that Dominic has been in contact with Ross. "Dominic has put out discreet feelers and has been quite encouraged by the response," said the source. "Storylines don't get much bigger than getting the Mitchell brothers back together."
Just last week, Barbara Windsor, who played Peggy Mitchell, said she would love a Mitchell family reunion.
With Phil (Steve McFadden) still on Albert Square, Barbara said: "It would obviously be a great storyline to have Peggy reunited with her boys. Never say never. It could happen."
Up until now, rumours of a Ross return was all down to speculation, including teasing from Ross himself and further rumours from Aunt Babe actress Annette Badland.
Following Gillian Taylforth's recent return as Kathy Beale, Dominic had recently told reporters: "I think the fact that you've got Phil, Kathy, Sharon – there's a person missing, isn't there? To get all four on screen at the same time is a dream. As an EastEnders fan, you want to watch that."
Ross originally left EastEnders in1999 after playing his character for nine years. He returned for a year in 2005.
Acting aside, Ross is well-known for making a string of successful documentaries including Ross Kemp on Gangs and Extreme World.
