Michelle Keegan has admitted she'd love to play Doctor Who's new assistant.

The former Coronation Street star told the Daily Star Sunday that she's a big fan of the BBC One sci fi show and would jump at the chance to join the cast.

Mich said: "I used to watch it as a kid with my dad. I still watch it now. I would love to do it."

There will be an opening for a new Doctor's assistant soon, as current assistant, Jenna Coleman, has confirmed she will quit at the end of the current series.

Michelle's name was linked to the role back in September, with bookies saying she was the favourite to replace Jenna's character Clara.

Since leaving Coronation Street earlier this year, Michelle has starred in BBC drama Ordinary Lies and won a role in the new series of Our Girl, replacing fellow soap star Lacey Turner.

She's also thought to have landed a part in ITV2 comedy Plebs, and recently filmed a "gritty" part for film Strangeways Here We Come.
