Geordie Shore star Holly Hagan has admitted she knew Marnie Simpson and Ricky Rayment's engagement wasn't going to work out.

Marnie and Ricky first got together in January earlier this year and enjoyed a whirlwind romance that saw the pair get engaged after just six months of dating.

Sadly, though, things didn't work out for the pair and Marnie confirmed the couple's split last month. She told fans "everything happens for a reason" and although Marnie had seemed pretty smitten at the time, her co-star Holly Hagan insists she and the former TOWIE star weren't ready for marriage so soon.

Speaking to Reveal, Holly exclusively told us she wasn't surprised to hear Ricky and Marnie had called it quits.

"I think after he proposed so soon, we all knew it was going to go downhill from there," she admitted.

While Holly and her co-stars were filming away in Greece for Geordie Shore's new series, Ricky had flown out to surprise Marnie, popping the question while she was filming the series finale.

At the time, Marnie had told fans she was the "happiest girl in the world", but did confess at first she was annoyed that had beau had proposed on camera.

Suggesting the pair still didn't know each other well enough to agree to wed, Holly added: "I think when you put too much pressure on a relationship in the beginning, it's just going to fall apart. They both weren't ready, they had been together for three or four months, they didn't even know each other.

"Even Marnie said, 'if he knew me properly, he would have known I wouldn't have wanted anything like that. I'd want it to be my family there, I wouldn't want the producers to be the first to know, I'd want my mum to know.'"

Insisting Marnie is doing ok since becoming single again, Holly told us: "I think Marnie's really happy at the minute she's strong enough to be on her own, I don't think she's short of attention anyway."

Marnie and Ricky first showed signs of trouble in their relationship back in August. Since then, both reality stars have openly spoke about their short-lived engagement to the press, but a reason for their split still hasn't been completely confirmed.

Addressing their break up with fans, Marnie said she had come to the end of a very important chapter in her life. She then added that she was "moving forward to the future".

Her tweets came after it was revealed she had kissed her co-star Aaron Chalmers during a personal appearance with her castmates in Italy. While she insists she and Ricky weren't together at the time, he still saw it as the final straw for their romance.

"I wasn't actually with Ricky at the time," she explained. "We were texting and we were going to work things out.... but that made him not even want to try again.

"Obviously he didn't and that's fair enough, but I think in my head we weren't together for a reason."

Marnie has since hit out at rumours that claimed she and Ricky were getting back together. Reiterating their split is for good, she said: "There's no chance that we're going to get back together because I know that he knows we aren't right for each other."

Geordie Shore returns Tuesday 20 October at 10pm on MTV.
