In a shock move, one of Nick Grimshaw's final six boys, Tom Bleasby, has now quit the competition, meaning a spot of Judges' Houses could be up for grabs.
With filming looming, show bosses are now deciding whether to let Grimmy carry on with just five acts or replace Tom with another hopeful. If they do, they have insisted anyone could be a potential choice, with controversial Mason's name even being thrown into the mix...
Can you imagine the look on Simon Cowell's face?
According to The Mirror a source from the show explained there is potential for Mason to make comeback. They told the paper: "It could be Mason, it could be Nathanael... It could be anyone of them. No decision made on this yet. As it stands - they could go with Nick just having five boys or choose a replacement from the Six Chair Challenge."
If Mason was to join Grimmy in his hometown of Oldham, he would certainly be a controversial choice. The singer ruffled feathers during his Six Chair Challenge audition, and after questioning his lack of air time, Simon branded Mason an "a*sehole".
Turning his attention to the judging panel, Mason said: "I've got something to say. I invite you all to film this on your phones. With the first auditions I watched on Saturday, people had ten minute slots and I went to 47 seconds."
With that, Simon told Mason he had no right to insult the show. "You're five seconds away from getting thrown off this stage," the music mogul told him. "If you've got a problem then just go."
After refusing to apologise to the producers, Mason dropped his mic and left, with Rita Ora slamming the star's attitude as the "Kanye West effect".
And unluckily for him, his rant at Simon cost him the show. After Mason left the stage, Nick told his fellow judges: "He would have got a chair."
Now, though, it seems Mason could be reconsidered.
On Monday evening (12 October), hopeful Tom announced he had decided to leave The X Factor process.
Despite battling through the Six Chair Challenge and winning a place at Judges' Houses, Tom called it quits due to "personal reasons", announcing his exit on Twitter.
He has since opened up about his decision, explaining he didn't feel vocally ready to continue.
"It was a tough decision; I think I really discovered it at the 6 Chair Challenge. I just don't know if I felt vocally ready to take on the competition and the pressure," he explained. "I feel I need more time to better myself."
Nick, meanwhile, has wished Tom the best of luck for the future.
