Jake plays Max Branning in the BBC One soap, and on Monday night's episode (28 September), viewers watched as his character was wrongly found guilty of Lucy Beale's murder.
However, Max was soon able to do a runner from the courtroom, leaving his fate up in the air.
"There are twists and turns," Jake explained on ITV's This Morning. "Obviously they will work my break into the story, and Max is either on the run or gets recaptured, I don't know, we'll find out this week. It'll be interesting to see what plays out."
He added: "I'll return next September, so yeah, it could go on for another year."
Jake, who joined EastEnders in 2006, announced in May that he would be taking a year-long break from the soap.
Speaking about his decision to take some time out, Jake explained: "I've been there for nine years, done just under a thousands episodes...so nine years without a break, and I've got two small children at home so it'll be nice to reacquaint myself with the family. It felt the right time to take a break."
Fans needn't worry, as Max Branning will most definitely be returning to Walford.
"I literally have nothing planned, nothing lined up," Jake continued. "The time felt right to take a break and to give the character a break off screen but I'm really honoured to have signed a contract to go back."
