Jay is taking part in the new series of the BBC One talent and has thrown himself into rehearsals ahead of its official return next week.
Jay actually learned contemporary dance in college, but professional dancer Aliona thinks his shyness could prove difficult for him in the competition.
Speaking to The Sun, Aliona said: "I think he's going to struggle because he's so shy, so with the whole performance we're going to have to bring that out of him."
Aliona, who won Strictly in 2011 with McFly star Harry Judd, added: "I don't have to be tough on Jay, he's so tough on himself - I almost have to console him!""
'All Time Low' singer Jay previously said that he wanted his dance partner to "crack the whip" during rehearsals.
The popstar himself admitted to having some struggles: "I think my biggest challenge will be smiling. Not because I'm not happy but because I'm not naturally a smiley person so when it comes to one of the more enthusiastic dances I think I'm going to really struggle to bring that character out."
The first live show kicks off on Friday 25 September.
