Sarah Harding's acting in Coronation Street has been defended by co-star Tristan Gemmill.

Former Girls Aloud star Sarah, 33, appeared in a four-episode arc of the ITV soap as Joni Preston but her acting was panned by many critics and viewers.

Now, co-star Tristan has spoken out in her defence.

"I got on very well with Sarah and found her delightful to work with – and thought the criticism about her was unfair," he told The Sun. "She had a lot of emotion to get into a very short space of time and I thought she made a good job of it."

Sarah played the wife of Tristan's character Robert, who is back on Corrie after last being seen in 2003. Back then, the character was played by Julian Kay.

Earlier this month, singer Sarah said she was ignoring the criticism, telling ITV's This Morning: "I try not to pay any attention to that. If you're going in as a known face, you're always going to get flak. If anything, I turn all that into a positive energy. It just makes me more determined.

"I enjoyed it - it's off my bucket list now," she continued. "I've done films before, but I've never done soaps before. I was only ever asked to do four episodes and I had the time to do it while I was waiting for my track to be finished. "It made me happy anyway, never mind what anyone else thought! Everyone's going to have an opinion at the end of the day."
