Liam Payne has promised fans there is "much more to come" following confirmation that One Direction will take a break next year.

The boyband will embark on a hiatus next March following five insanely busy, hectic and successful years at the top of the charts.

But they have promised fans it is just a temporary split and they intend to get back together and resume 1D in the future.

"Can't wait to put more time into everything we do and coming out with something great. Thank you so much for everything you have done for us it's been the most amazing five years and there's so much more to come."

According to reports, the boys will continue their world tour until the end of this year, release their fifth album, and promote it over Christmas and at the start of the new year, before parting ways.

It's not been confirmed yet what Liam, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Harry Styles will do during their time apart, but the inevitable rumours of solo careers, acting jobs and presenting work are flying.

Liam's tweets came after Niall also reassured fans about the band's future, promising their hiatus does not mean a split and will not lead to a split.

It's also been reported that the break was planned with or without Zayn Malik's departure in March. He has since signed a solo record deal.

1D's last full concert for a while will be at Sheffield's Motorpoint Arena on 31 October.
