Back in July, Simon's mum and former dancer Julie sadly passed away at 89 years old. Despite initially cancelling X Factor auditions, Simon was back at work on the ITV talent competition just two days after his mother's death, even though he now admits he almost pulled out of the show following his loss.
Julie is reported to have died after suffering a stroke and on announcing her passing, the Cowell family said they were "heartbroken" and would "miss her terribly".
Shortly after, The X Factor postponed auditions that were meant to take place in Manchester, but Simon made the decision to continue with filming, insisting it's what his mum would have wanted him to do.
Speaking to the Sunday Mirror, the 55-year-old said: "It would have been, 'this is your show, you love the show, go back and do your job'. I think she would have been very disappointed if I'd said I'm not going to do it."
The X Factor is set to return to our screens this Saturday (29 August) and will see Simon take to the show's judging panel alongside Cheryl Fernandez-Versini and new judges Rita Ora and Nick Grimshaw.
Ahead of its new series, Simon had hinted there would be many changes to the competition and its format. Explaining his decision to shake things up on The X Factor, he added: "It's about keeping it relevant and interesting for everyone."
As well as the addition of Rita and Nick, Caroline Flack and Olly Murs are back this time round as the X Factor's new hosts. They will be presenting the main show while Rochelle Humes and Melvin Odoom will take over The Xtra Factor, replacing Sarah-Jane Crawford.
With auditions and boot camp now all wrapped up, the judges and contestants are currently preparing for the show's Judges' Houses round. And according to reports, we could see the results from Judges' Houses announced live this year.
Instead of jetting off to each exotic location with the judges and their acts, it is thought Caroline and Olly will be staying behind in London to present the results live from the studio.
To get us all excited for The X Factor's return this weekend, ITV has released a new trailer offering a first look at this year's auditions.
We. Can't. Wait.
