Shayne Ward has promised fans he won't turn his back on music while he's working on Coronation Street.

The former X Factor winner, 30, will join the ITV soap's cast this week, playing Aidan Connor, a distant cousin of Michelle. He's made no secret of the fact he wants to pursue an acting career but that doesn't mean he's leaving the music industry behind.

He told The Sun's TV Magazine: "If I can stay here at Corrie for the next 10, 15, even 20 years, I would love that. It still doesn't feel real but I couldn't be happier playing Aidan.

"But music is my first love so I'll always do both. My last album reached No. 17 in the charts without the support of a record label and I'm planning to do live shows on my days off. I swore to the fans I would, and I'll stick by that."

As for his much-talked about departure from Simon Cowell's record label, he would only say: "I was upset but Syco isn't the only label in the world - you can either be bitter and never do music again or pull your socks up and get on with it. As long as you don't have a big ego, you'll succeed."

Shayne won the second series of X Factor and went on to release four studio albums and ten singles. His most recent song was 'My Heart Would Take You Back', released in April.
