Dwayne confirmed the casting when he tweeted on Monday evening (10 August): "Welcoming my dude @ZacEfron to #BAYWATCH. Our movie will be big, fun and RATED R.. Like me when I drink."

There had been speculation that Zac was "in talks" to take up the role, where he is set to play a young lifeguard who joins forces with a stalwart veteran (Johnson) to save their beach from an oil tycoon.

Zac, who is currently on the promo tour for new film We Are Your Friends, confirmed it himself on Tuesday morning (11 August), replying to Dwayne's tweet: "So stoked brother - baby oil for 2 plz."

It's welcome news for fans, as the casting means 27-year-old Zac - who won 'Best Shirtless Performance' at the MTV Movie Awards in 2014 - will be shooting lots of, well, shirtless scenes. Get ready for those red swimming trunks and slow motion beach runs...

Dwayne, 43, confirmed Baywatch was heading to he big screen in October 2014, saying in an Instagram post: "'This is my beach b**ch!' Rumours are true... we're making #BAYWATCH the movie. Edgy, raunchy and hopefully, funny as all hell. Cue slo mo running on the beach... #WhoNeedsMouthToMouth #RedShortsBeHugginABrotha."

Production is set to begin in early 2016.

TV show Baywatch aired from 1989 to 2001 for 11 seasons, most notably starring Pamela Anderson and David Hasselhoff. Next month it will celebrate its 26th anniversary.
