At the end of last week, Zayn revealed he had signed his first solo record deal with RCA Records.
Zayn, who left 1D in March after five years in the band, said: "I guess I never explained why I left. It was for this moment to be given the opportunity to show you who I really am! #realmusic #RCA."
Now speaking to Nick Grimshaw on Radio 1, Liam said: "He's off doing his own thing at the moment which is cool for him. But it's nice that we've banded together and I feel like we're stronger than ever now actually, which is strange but it's worked out really nicely for everybody.
"Congratulations to him on his new record deal and stuff, it's cool. Loads of music, loads of love! There's too much history for there not to be love, to be fair."
Zayn's exit from 1D came as a huge shock to fans, but Liam said Zayn will now be able to make the music he wants to.
"If your heart's not into something you can't just carry on doing it because of fame and stuff," Liam continued. "You have to go and do what you want to do. One Direction was never Zayn's sort of music so he kind of always wanted to find something else.
"I did a lot of writing with Zayn that was really cool, I've got a couple of songs that we've done that we haven't released."
Over the weekend, Zayn showed his support for 1D's new single, 'Drag Me Down'. It's their first song since Zayn's departure from the band.
Zayn said: "Proud of my boys the new single is sick. Big love."
