Zayn Malik describes how he feels about 1D's first single without him

Zayn Malik has made a rare reference to his former bandmates One Direction on Twitter.

And he makes clear there are no hard feelings after his decision to leave the band.

Acknowledging 1D's first single without him, Zayn tweeted: "Proud of my boys the new single is sick. Big love. :) x."

Fans were clearly thrilled about Zayn's touching tweet, with many begging the four remaining members of 1D to reply.

One fan said: "Aww Zayn that is officially the best tweet ever!!!!"

Another said: "'My boys' I'm crying."

One Direction surprised fans on Friday (31 July) when they released their brand new single 'Drag Me Down'.

It marked the band's first song since the departure of Zayn.

Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan are currently in the middle of the US leg of their 'On The Road Again' world tour.

Zayn Malik signs solo deal with RCA

Just two days before, Zayn signed his first solo record deal with RCA Records.

At the time, he tweeted: "I guess I never explained why I left. It was for this moment to be given the opportunity to show you who I really am! #realmusic #RCA."

Some fans were upset by the tweet, which they took to be an insult to the music he produced with his former bandmates.

Zayn quit One Direction in March after five phenomenally successful years with the group who finished third on The X Factor's seventh series.
