Paula, Simon and Randy were the original judges on Fox's talent show, which will end for good after its 15th series in 2016 following a 13-year run.
Speaking on James Corden's The Late Late Show, Paula suggested that the trio could reunite on screen.
James told her: "We are coming in to the final season of Idol. When you were there, let's be honest, it was at its peak."
Paula said: "It was. It was wonderful. I know that Fox is trying to figure out if maybe the original three would come back for maybe a day or so, I don't know."
At its peak, American Idol drew in an audience of more than 30 million viewers per episode.
It made stars out of winners Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and Jordin Sparks, and also discovered the likes of Jennifer Hudson, Adam Lambert and Kellie Pickler.
American Idol's current judges are Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr., who will stay on the show until its end.
