BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show host Nick was a surprise choice for the judging panel because he's not a musician, songwriter and doesn't work as a music exec.
But speaking to The Sun, boss Simon said he's confident that once the show starts, viewers will understand why he chose Nick for the panel.
"Nick is really funny and that's why I wanted to hire him for the show. Him being on X Factor will show a different side of his personality and that'll help his radio show and Radio 1."
Simon also hired Rita Ora for this year's panel, completing the lineup of Simon, Nick and returning judge Cheryl Fernandez-Versini.
Filmed auditions for X Factor are well under way, with the judges currently checking out the hopefuls at Wembley Arena in London.
The show will air on ITV later this summer.
